I have a call drake called Lance, some of you might remember he was bitten by my dog and survived against all odds so we called him after lance Armstrong , well he became besotted by my cream legbar he followed her every where all day. When she went on to lay he sat under the nest box and waited for her even if she was there for an hour , if he couldn't see her for even two minutes he would freak and keep calling until he found her. Well when I went over to lock up tonight he was going mad running up and down calling her , it was dark and he always goes in with the hens at dusk so I knew there was something wrong , I couldn't see her any where outside so I went into the coop . I had put a cage ontop of a roost that they don't use for a hen that I thought was going broody but she wouldn't sit so I took her out but stupidly left the cage up there. My poor hen must have tried to sit on the cage and it fell down on top of her and broke her neck

. I am so upset for lance I can't stop crying I don't know what he will do in the morning when I let them out he always waits for her . Two of my other hens were missing and I found them in the field they must have got an awful shock , one seemed fine when I put her on the roost but the other was very quite and when I checked on her later she had dropped a soft egg onto the poop board she can walk and I can't see and injuries , do you think she is just in shock? I am sorry this is so long but I know you will all understand how upset I am because it was my fault and I am dreading tomorrow with lance because he dosent ever look at the ducks or other hens just this one what shall I do

I'm sorry for your loss, but pleeease don't blame yourself! No point in self punishment, it sounds like you do your best for them and love them a lot... Lance will be ok, animals are even more resilient than humans and maybe another pal will help warm his heart? Again, I'm so sorry! I hope you feel better soon...

Thanks duckles I cant see his following anyone else he came as part of a trio but was interested in the ducks just the one hen so we call him the hen duck I am dreading the morning

I'm sorry for your loss. I know it was an accident, and I know we beat ourselves up for our shortsightedness sometimes in not recognizing what COULD or MIGHT happen. I've lost a hen and a rooster to freak accidents that happened because I didn't look hard enough or carefully enough at what COULD or MIGHT happen. It's rough, but remember to forgive yourself, and learn from it. Speak kindly and gently to Lance, and give him extra treats & attention to help him get through this rough time. (and speak gently and kindly to YOURSELF, and give yourself a big helping of forgiveness and grace).

Oh Sandra!

I just read this thread..... I am in tears just reading this, I know that Lance so loved her - PLEASE don't feel that you are in any way to blame.... this is one of those incidences that cannot be predicted nor avoided... I do so feel for you and Lance - hopefully he will attach to another - he has come through so much adversity... he is strong thanks to your love and decdication to helping him overcome the attack on him - please don't lose faith.... I just wish I could be with you to hug you !!!

Life isn't fair..... look after yourself and Lance

Lots of love
