So, the farm store had chicks...

And here they are settling into my makeshift brooder!

Ended up picking up:
1 Cinnamon Queen
2 Easter Eggers
1 Rhode Island Red
1 Buff Brahma
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte
1 Americana
1 Black Australorp
What's the temp under that lamp? They may get overheated with the lamp that low.

They're sooo cute. Missing having chicks. Question. Are they indoors? If so, the red heat lamp is going to be waay too warm for them. If out doors, it's according to how cold it is. I always kept my babies indoors for a while with a simple 100 W. Bulb. Then as they grew, lowered the wattage. You can tell if the are staying away from the light, that it's too warm. You like to see them laying in between the light and just outside of it. Another reason for not using red heat lamps. A possibility of fire. Those things get quite hot! And those wood chips catch pretty fast. Have fun with your babies. ♥️

To be honest, I don't really track the actual temperature, but rather just monitor the behavior of the chicks. The ideal seems to be where I have a couple chicks under the lamp and a couple away from the lamp and there should be very little peeping. Currently I have a couple that are asleep directly under the lamp, three away from the lamp but kinda in the middle of the brooder clustered together and a few more checking out the food and water. Not seeing anyone panting and everyone seems calm at the moment.

But yea, the picture isn't great but the bulb was about 12 inches away from the bedding. I backed it off to 16 inches and will be monitoring them to see how everyone reacts.
