So what would you do?

Just as a final note, i did write a letter to the vet, and asked him to call me. He did call, eventually. He did take responsibility for not keeping and monitoring Inky, and was very apologetic, although who can say if it would have made a difference if Inky had stayed. yes, he said he and staff were tired and overwhelmed that day, and he just wanted to get out of there. He finished by saying that he owed me, whatever that means. I've decided to let it go, since he's done so many favors for us over the years, but the conversation with him did not really make me feel any better. Anyway, what's done is done. I just wanted to say thank you again to all for the sympathies.

I am so terribly sorry to hear about your loss, and the overall context in which it happens probably makes it all seem worse. Losing one of our loving furry animals is difficult enough. Glad to hear your vet called and apologized. The "see you later" seems so unprofessional and cold!

Again, very very sorry about Inky. He sounds like a doll (one after a familiar fashion in this home).

Thank you. I miss him so very much. We all know what it is like to lose an animal...they are family members...no matter what species...cat, dog, horse, bird, what have you..we all have had our special pet friends. And he was one of the most special. It does help to be able to talk about him. I still have not forgiven the vet, although having talked about what happened over time to several people., most tend to agree that I should just try to let it go. Easier said than done, but I probably will. It would have been nice, though, if the vet's office had at least sent a sympathy card.:(

Just a thought you might want to think about. If you need to use that vet again, are you going to have the confidence in him? I know I wouldn't. I won't see a certain vet in the office I go too. If I had listened to her I would have put my dog down for kidney failure. She's still with us and doing fine a year later. I also had no problems letting them know that I only want the one vet that I really like and why only her. Same as a doc for humans. If I dont like you for any reason, your out. You need to have the confidence in your vet to make good choices.

Of course I've thought about that. One of the main reasons why I decided to stay with him is that he will give me advice for my chickens and peafowl if they have minor ailments or injuries that he thinks he can safely treat, and he charges me little or nothing to do so. Since most exotic vets charge an arm and a leg, that is something to consider.

Also, he's been our vet for 20 some years...and I do have to give him credit for monitoring Inky's health and giving sound advice regarding his care during the five or six years that he had his hyperthyroid issue, and he was also the one that suggested that I take Inky to OSU to have his radioactive iodine procedure done to treat his thyroid condition, ( i had never heard of this procedure) and although Inky was one of the 2 % in patients that this procedure did not cure, it did slow his thyroid down. He has also (so far) successfully treated one of our other cats who has a very unusual eye disorder that one of the high powered clinics here was at a loss as to where to go with it after a period of time.

Last year, he did surgery on my daughter's cat for her,(which was successful), and charged her $300.00...and she had gotten estimates from other vets for the same procedure for 1500.00 and up.

Sooo...all things considered....I kind of have to weigh pros and cons. I may think twice though before I have him do surgery on anyone again...and I will never ever again take any of my animals there for anything...on a Saturday.
