Hi guys,

I just picked up 4 baby Orpingtons that were 'orphaned' unfortunately. 10 days old. They're doing great, 3 girls and what my son calls a "maybe" rooster :). "Maybe Rooster" is strong as hell, never seen a chick so active (well, one of my ex was, but drugs were involved)

Feels like a fresh start, I'm wondering if there are known 'good practices' to socialize them regularly; I don't wanna overwhelm them but having a batch in the flock that aren't as 'wild' as the rest would be nice.

Ok, ok... I've seen some videos of chicken enthousiats fellas on "the Tube" when they sit down and the girls would just jump on their lap.

Their well being will always come first but I'm wondering what can be done to "socialize" them periodically without overwhelming them.

Thanks!

One word. TREATS.

Chickens live by their guts...instincts, and well, appetite. A way to a chicken's heart is through its stomach.

Every time you go out call the same little sound, move slowly (as in no fast movements), and have treats.

Let them get used to you, then gently toss the treats down as you make the same little "chook chook" sound, or whatever you want to say.

Rinse. Repeat. Do that daily, even several times a day.

The nummier the treat, the faster you will gain their hearts.

Always respect their space to build trust. Resist forcing them to come close or to be held or petted.

You can sit down (have a stool or chair nearby) and watch them as they eat their treats. Toss a few more.

Slowly but surely you'll begin to win over their little avarice hearts.

In time, generally somebody wants to interact with you more. Never allow aggression towards you for the treat though. Keep interacting with the treats. Begin to feed by hand those willing. Then pet gently those who will come close to take a treat out of your hand. Soon somebody will jump onto your lap if you want. (I'm not into chicken lap holding...I'm happy with their adoring faces running to me as I call out with the treat bucket).

Just be sure you are in control of the situation, especially with the possible rooster. (Think yappy, snippy dogs allowed to jump and nip for their treat).

Happy chicken taming :D
