Had a scare in the nesting boxes, haven't seen anything like this before- any ideas why it was laid like this?

Hi @starsstella :frow Welcome To BYC

How old is your hen?
What type of food/treats do you feed?

It could be a number of things - a one time "glitch", an improper diet or not enough calcium, disturbances within the flock to something more serious as a pre-cursor to reproductive/laying disorders.

See that she is drinking well, add some poultry vitamins to her water for a couple of days or direct dose with vitamins like Poultry Nutri-Drench (1cc per 3lbs daily), it won't hurt to offer a little extra calcium for a day or so as well. Limit treats to no more than 5-10% of daily intake and offer oyster shell free choice.

Watch her for any signs of lethargy, difficulty walking and going off food/water.

It's hard to tell who it was, we have 13 hens laying daily. All are under a year, just started laying. We do a mixture of food, pullet feed I believe. Then in that I mix calcium. I only do a few treats, like mealworms every few days, but they have been eating more veggies from the garden?

If you are mixing calcium (Oyster Shell?) in with the feed - don't do that:)
Offer the Oyster Shell free choice, you can place it in a separate container in the run, they will take what they need.

There are so many feed "types" on the market these day - I'm not quite sure what pullet feed is. Once your girls are all laying, you can use Layer Feed or feed an all flock type feed like Flock Raiser.

Fresh veggies from the garden are great!
