My golden comets are 18 weeks old. One of them started laying last week. No problems. Yesterday there were two eggs in the nest boxes. Alright now we are cooking. Today when I checked there were no eggs in the nest boxes, ok I thought since I read here early that when they start laying they may skip a day. Well I started to look around and right in front of the poop door is a very thin shelled egg broken in half and boy did it stink to high heaven. So I cleaned it all up and then when back to clean the run and get fresh water and lo and behold there was a perfect egg behind one of the waterers in the run. Do you think the soft egg is from my girl that started laying yesterday?? Why did one of them lay the egg in the run? Did the horrible smell at the door scare her off from going in to lay? Hopefully tommorrow will be better.

Soft shell and other defects are usually nothing to worry about in newly laying hens.
It takes them awhile to get all the kinks out of the system.
