Hi - My 20 week old pullets (I've 5 of them) have just started to lay. I've had 4 small, but perfect, eggs over 3 days. This morning I discovered a shell-less egg in the coop bedding beneath the perches. There was no shell & I don't think the birds had noticed it before I removed it. The other eggs had all been layed in the nest boxes. Is this common in the begining? - thanks, in advance, for your help

From what I understand, pullets can sometimes do this when they first start to lay, but I would still give them some oyster shell just in case. good luck!

Yes, mine did this in the beginning along with some rough shelled eggs, small eggs and many double yokers.
I sure miss getting those doubles.
But as patydz stated, have oyster shell available for them.
Good luck and ENJOY! Nothing beats going out to the coop and collecting your fresh treasures.

My two Austalorps had been laying almost daily until we had a 98 degree day on Friday and a 102 degree day on Saturday and I added 2 pullets to the coop. Oh, and 1 seems to be trying to go broody as of Sunday so I blocked the nest box they usually use to keep her broodiness out. They skipped laying Sunday and Monday, then there was an egg in the other nest box (a bit lighter in shell color than usual) and a shell-less egg on the floor of the coop on Tuesday. Weirdos! I assume the stress of the heat and new additions to the flock could be factors... BTW, what do you do with a shell-less egg? Eat it? Throw it away?
