My 2 GLW girls just turned 6 months and have just started laying this week. I got 1 egg on the first day, none on the second, and 2 on the third. I had only been feeding them Dumor crumbles for layers (it said it was a complete formula that would not need extra calcium) but decided to add oyster shell after the first dud egg ( they also get scratch and grit). The weather has also been back and forth as far as 2 weeks ago was normal and warm, but then a cold front hit last week. This week has been warm mornings and cold nights-could that be messing with their body cycles? Are there other measures I should take to try to stimulate the calcification of the shells?
Thanks!

Well since your hens are very young, they are probably just starting to figure out how to lay a proper egg. A soft shelled egg is nothing to get all worked up about, especially when they're first laying, unless it starts to happen everyday. It just means they do not have enough calcium, but since you said you have a complete formula with oyster shells, I would just smash some egg shells up into their food. Again, since they are just starting to lay, you may not have to add anything to their food.

I'm glad you asked this. We had three last week back to back days and only three normal eggs from ten pullets a little older than your girls. Ours are 6 1/2 months. We also have the oyster shells to supplement their layer feed plus free range and scraps. We chalked it up to being young and still learning. They've really been laying well since then thankfully.
