Hello all! Question- my Barred Rock hen laid an enormous, body checked egg yesterday morning. This morning she laid a very soft, pliable egg. This is the first one I have seen in the past few months that I have had her and wondered if it had anything to do with the fact that she laid such a large egg yesterday? She seems healthy otherwise...

I'm not very sure

the article on eggs may help though :)

Yes, one could have to do with the other....could just be a glitch in the system or could be a more serious issue.

Keep an eye on her.

What is the age of bird?

She is only about 6-7 months old
How long has she been laying?
It's not unusual to get some funky eggs in the first months or so of laying......until the system is tuned up and running well.

P.S. your avatar is cracking me up! Bunny ears?

I know right? I actually think they are fox ears!

(Google "chickens wearing hats"...adorable!!!)

She has been laying about a month. The day before she laid a huge egg that had a ridge around the middle (I think it's called a 'body checked egg'?) Anyhoo, like I said, she has laid fine up til today and we got that freaky soft egg.

Hopefully, she just still working out the kinks......stress from a predator scare or the heat or feed or population change.

You know, funny you should say that about a predator scare. Poor girl was attacked by our rooster the day before...I wonder if that stressed her enough to affect the eggs? Hmmmm.....
