Soft shelled eggs

My Rhode Island Red has just gone through a molt and layed her first egg in a while. However, the egg broke in her coop very easily and when I went to clean it up, I noticed it had a very soft and thin shell. Now, she has been very ill for the past two days, as in, to the point of near death, but has almost completely recovered. She has only been eating fruit for the past day, and refuses to eat her grain or grit or layer. I don't know if this could have something to do with it. Is a soft-shelled egg normal for after a molt of sickness? And what can I do other than give her the oyster shells because she refuses to eat those right now. Thanks.

You can give a Tums as a calcium boost -- but don't give one every day. And don't let her get too used to the fruit. Maybe mix it in with some feed.

She may just have had a rough molt -- it can take a lot out of them, particularly protein, making the fruit even more of a concern. A can of canned mackerel or even tuna might be a good idea, or some of your leftover meat or a carcass. Maybe some infant vitamin drops (no iron, I read) and a probiotic, maybe a little yogurt or ACV. Just try to up her nutrition in general. I hope she'll be OK.
