Hi all. My Barred Rock is laying soft, undevloped eggs...and not actually laying them I guess..Yesterday one just fell right out while she was walking. It had no real shell to speak of... The rest off the flock is laying Just fine. Any Ideas?

My two Red Stars had this happen when they had been laying for only a month or so. I noticed one was squatting often in the coop yard and acting very uncomfortable. She actually passed two or so soft eggs that were not in the nesting box. I did some research on this site and found that the eggs could get bound up in her tract, and read how to massage her tummy area and try to relax her. This seemed to help because soon after another soft malformed egg came out and she went back to normal laying. I also bought some calcium chips and started supplementing them with yogurt just in case calcium deficiency could have been the cause. Soon after my other girl had a bit of the same problem, and it passed as well. They have not had any more incidents. Hope this helps.

The only thing that has changed is that we have removed one aggressive RIR. Overall production has decreased tremendously..(taking into acct the one-a-day loss of the RIR) Its odd. Diet: same. Pen: same. Weather here in the Northeast has gotten better, warmer, more daylight. More ranging time/space. Im thinking it the prob is with her alone. This is the third egg Ive found unformed...none of them being in the laying boxes. Yesterday, she walked by with a "phfffft" sound and there it was. Now I know who..just not why. ?

Thank you..She has been laying for around 8 mos now and she seemed to have the hang of it..i just dont know.

One of my year old hens has laid these two days in a row and yesterday didn't lay at all. Their pen has been the same, but we do have some younger hens in a pen right next to them (but they've been with us/around them for months. We live in SW Florida and its basically summer. Hot and humid and raining everyday. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

I have year old hens and one is just starting a much more severe molt than the partial molt the others have recently experienced. This is the reason I believe I have got a couple softer shells lately. I do feed mine their own shells lightly crushed up but I slacked off for a week or so. I think the combination resulted in the thin shells.
