Simultaneous with a (failed) incubator attempt, one of our hens got broody.
The end result was distressing and I wondered for any pointers on where we might have gone wrong.
She started with 8 eggs, which we marked. Even though I inadvertently smashed one,she ended up with 10 so obviously something odd! Often we'd look in on the house at night and one or two more hens would literally be sitting on top of the broody one, so I guess more got laid.
On Tuesday we could see pipping, then heard chirping! Great stuff! The hen left the remaining eggs to follow the new chick about. All seemed well.
Last night we found the chick lying sickly in the house alone, the hen having abandoned it to return to the eggs. We took into into our kitchen and nursed it, but sadly it died a few hours later.
No clear ideas what we did wrong, unfortunately. Any opinions greatly appreciated.
Thanks
