At only 4 weeks, I am assuming they are still in the brooder. I usually put a piece of 1" x 2" in the brooder, on a couple of brick pieces, and they will play and sleep on that roost. Chickens don't have the grasping feet that most birds do, so a flat surface makes a better roost. Once they move to the coop I switch to a 2" x 4", wide side up.

As far as using nest boxes, my experience is that at first they might leave some eggs laying around on the ground. Eventually they'll figure it out, especially if you provide nice clean, private boxes.

You've still got a ways to go before they start laying. It might really help you learn more if you spend some time reading in the Learning Center. If you look at the top of this page, there is a button for it.

That'll help you last until they start laying!

Yes, they're still in the brooder for now. I should've prefaced my ? by saying that we're working on the coop and getting the layout designed. They have a small perch in their brooder box that they love, but they also huddle together on the floor of their box and sleep together (so sweet). As always, thanks for the tips!
