For the weekend I am taking care of 10 bantams. For the past few days a little showgirl has had pasty butt and others pick at her bottom. About an hour I got home she had a little dry blood on her bottom. She is running around ,eating, drinking and everything a little chick does. Before I brought her home a teacher fed them all some feed with mice droppings in it which I told them not to feed. Could this be cocci? If so how do I treat? Please help I am hoping to adopt this little one from school :\\

How old are they? Are they on medicated feed? In a brooder or on the ground? Have you checked the fresh poos for blood?

I'm thinking yogurt couldn't hurt, but maybe I'm wrong. I do know that treating for cocci even if you're unsure if that's the problem won't hurt them, so you might want to do that, just in case....

They are 2-3 days old and I put them on medicated today. They are in a plastic tub with paper towels at the bottom. At school they were put directly on woodchips. I haven't seen any poo with blood in it. What should I get to treat them with? It's to late to go to TSC now which I was hoping I'd get a response earlier so I could go. They all seem fine and happy.

It sounds like the others were picking at the little chick since you haven't seen bloody poo. You may need to separate her if they keep on pecking. You can put a divider in between if you only have one container and put a buddy in who gets along. Are they under white or red light? Red is better if they are pecking.

They are under a white light. I can't find any low watt red bulbs. I'm going to go check on her again.

Do you have a walmart's nearby? they carry red reptile lights from what I hear that are 85 watt. If not, you may need to separate so they don't peck her anymore. If they are being agressive you will need the red light so they can't see blood.

Look at her bottom and see if there is a sore where they have pecked at her. Also put paper towels down on the bottom of the brooder. You should be able to tell rather quickly if there is blood coming in the poop. Sit for a while and watch them and see if they are pecking the one in question.
