I have 4 egg layer (2 red sex-links, baren rock Mix, and a RIR)

My one red sex-link just started to lay on last Wednesday 8/26/09
She is only one doing a egg "squat" she laid one on Wed & Thurs, flow out over of her coop and was locked out Friday so I didn't find an egg on Friday,
but I got one today Saturday, along with this very gross thing, that was not there this morning...

it looked to have egg whites and a yellow yolk color in it. was next to the egg box not in with the good egg
Everyone is eating the same food.

what could it be and what do I need to do??

Looks like a shell less egg. Nothing to worry about. Try increasing their calcium with Oyster Shell. Sometimes those things happen. Stress can also cause those to happen.

that is a soft shelled egg

as far as i know it is somewhat normal mine do it occasionally

i agree with year of the rooster try giving them some crushed oyster shells

Do you think it was from her being locked out and it would have been the one she laid yesterday? and the good one was today?
or do you think someone else started to lay?

I do feed Oyster Shells although they pick around them so there is allot of the shells laying around

oh she just started!!

when they just start laying abnormal eggs are only expected

i dunno... maybe 50% of the time the first few eggs can be abnormal but then they should start laying normally
good luck

Don't forget to get crushed oyster shell. Put it in a bowl separate from their food so they can eat it when they want. Very important. Glad everything is O.K. Congratulations on the first egg.

A soft shell egg for a young pullet is nature's way to protect her until the egg track gets used to the egg passing. Pullet eggs are usually small of soft shell. Now if she is experienced and is making a habit of soft shells, there may be something you need to do differently; reduce stress, more calcium or oyster shell, etc. Congrats on your first egg.
