Here are photos of my two guys, maybe you guys can verify that they are indeed guys and I don't have crowing females! Also, these are Coturnix, right?

Runner is the brown one. He is angry and puffy. He is unhappy in the storage container and needs a proper home:

I couldn't get Popcorn to stand still for a front view shot, he is having fun playing with his box; he also likes the paper shreds I gave him to mess with, hope that is okay:

I dont have that color yet (popcorns color) so that's why im spazzing like a lunatic. You're lucky to get that color...i think that's ginger though i need to look around online first. A color i've been looking for and want. I wish you had a hen of that color as well i'd beg oyu to let them lay some eggs so i can buy em from ya! LOL!

monarc,

I'm glad someone else is in love with popcorn, now I know I'm not insane! I was thinking that Popcorn was simply Golden, though . I don't know where they came from, they were incubated at a local elementary school. I'll see if anyone with kids in the school can find out where they got the eggs.

Popcorn is my favorite. I keep calling him a "her" because a friend and I decided long ago that Popcorn was a girl because "she's" smarter!

haha well, Popcorns head kinda does look hen-ish but going off the breast color (and lack of spots) i'd personally say male....however since i don't know the color...(i still havent found good IDing proof online to back up my assumption yet lol) who's to say!

How old are they again? If they're over 8 weeks old and both are crowing, I think it's safe to say Popcorn is a boy too.

Popcorn is a beaut! I'd pay big bucks if i could swap a small flock of those from someone just so i could get that color. Deffinatly not just a golden, it may be a sub-color of golden that causes it, but nope that beauty is a ginger, cinnamon or something simliar. Too light to be a fawn i'd guess. It's a mystery that NEEDS resolved or im gonna go crazy

I hope ya dont mind,, i posted a picture of Popcorn on another group im on because I want to see what color your pretty birdie is!

They're over seas breeders, where they have access to way more colors in coturnix than we do over here in the US so im curious to see what they think it is AND if it is indeed a male. I still assume it is butit kinda looks henny in the head so im curious i'll let you know waht they say....may take them a few minutes to a few days to respond the forum isnt AS active as this one

Wow according to a breeder in the UK, Popcorn IS a golden. She said she's never seen a cream or a fawn (ginger must also be known as fawn?) with such dark facial markings so she said he's deffinatly a male and deffinatly golden!

SO! that gives me hope that i can breed my own popcorns (as i have several goldens, but none that dark *cries*)

Oh, thanks monarc! I'm glad to have the mystery solved, and your enthusiasm for the genetics side of things is a bit contagious. I found myself wondering if I could track down any more of the quail they hatched in this batch, but I should probably hold off before I try breeding, sounds like it's addictive!!

Oh, don't tempt me! If my community was more lenient I'd be all over it. It would be an awesome project for my homeschooled kids to learn a thing or two; we might have to do a more Mendel-like project with peas though, as I'm sure we couldn't get away with more birds! I really need to move to the country.
