Yesterday me and my family went walking around our local resovoir and halfway around we saw a lone pekin duck. He was swimming in the water. It was obvious that he was sick. We tried enticing it with food. You aren’t allowed to swim so none of us could go out and get it. We don’t have a kayak or boat so that I could possibly go and fetch it. The resovoir is covered in rocks so it wasn’t very possible it could get out. We called our local animal control and they said they could try but it’s not likely they will get out. We waited and waited but it was getting dark and it was hard to see the pekin.

I’m guessing some idiot bought them for Easter pics and then they got big and they just dumped it at the nearest body of water. It made me so angery sad.

We woke up this morning and drove to the resovoir hoping to see it. We couldn’t find it. We called animal control and they said they didn’t get it. Like I said it wasn’t possible for it to get on land because of the rocks. Especially being a pekin, it couldn’t fly to shore.

I know it probably died last night and I’m wondering if I did The right thing? Please don’t be hard on me if I did wrong things cause I’m sad. We would of brought the poor duck home

Not if I wanted to get arrested. There were Park officers all around because it’s a national park. Also it’s very disgusting water. I had decent clothes on. If I had play clothes on and there weren’t officers around I would of defined jumped in. And I don’t think it could of gotten lost. It would have to cross a extremely busy highway to get to the resovoir.

If this place isn't too far, maybe you can go back later with some more food and a big net. It may have been able to get out and is still in the area. But I don't think you should beat yourself up. You at least tried to help it. I'd tell you what I think of the person that dumped it but there are rules against such language on this site.

On a side note, there is absolutely, positively no excuse for dumping a domestic animal. It would be better to make a duck into dinner then to toss it out in the wild with little chance of survival and a high probability of experiencing a slow and painful death from starvation or at the hands of a predator.

We went back earlier today with food and net. Couldn’t find it. We will try to look tomorrow. Thanks everyone for advice!
