I was plowing and mowing for my grandpa today and I came back and walked over to the grow out pen. I saw a bird dead and blood dripping down the side of the cage. The bird was a Buff Orpington and there were other birds in with it. Only one was dead and it had a broken neck but no sign of pecking. A line of blood was coming from the leg of the cage where blood was and it lead to where the bird was laying inside of the cage. Something had to take it out and hit it against it. Plus the rock that was propping the gate up was knocked over. Sorry for the rant, but I feel violated and mad. I have my bow ready, the phone in my pocket, the deer cams pointed and no trespassing signs up. I'm just so mad, if he comes back I don't know if I can keep myself from going crazy. Any ideas as to what I should do next?

Um... if you think a human did this, put away the bow for starters! You can't take the law into your own hands. I can imagine you are horribly upset, I know I would be! Not sure what to suggest, you could call the police perhaps, but put away the bow for sure! You can't shoot someone with a bow for killing your chicken! I'm really sorry about this, it's awful. But be smart, don't do anything crazy.

If you really feel a person did this, call the police and put away the bow. I hate that you had to find something like that, but going off half-cocked won't fix the situation and could get you in more trouble than you can handle.

I wouldn't shoot someone over a chicken or material thing, but I'm not gonna let them come on my property killing stuff and messing with the gate. Telling them to leave doesn't usually work... I'm sure a person did it because there is no way the bird hopped out of the cage, smashed it's head against the cage, then limped back into the cage leaving a trail of blood all the way there.

I'm not staking out to shoot someone or anything, but if someone comes here trying to harm me I'm not going to let them... I highly doubt the police will do anything, the last time I called over something they never came out. I did sound crazy, but don't worry I'm not about to shoot someone or go crazy. If someone does come back I will call the cops and make sure they don't break or kill anything though...

Sorry folks, but if someone came on my property uninvited and with intent to harm my family or animals, I wouldn't hesitate to use whatever means available to protect them. There is a big difference between that and hunting someone down for retribution! In most jurisdictions the police won't respond to non-injury incidents like petty theft and property damage anymore, so the victims' only recourse is to go to the station and make a report that typically gets filed and forgotten. I'm not advocating taking the law into one's own hands, but l strongly support the right to bear arms (and arm bears)!

that to sad i bet it was some dumb crazy kid that is just to sad

If I found out someone killed one of my pets and they were dumb enough to come back and try it again I'm not sure I'd treat them any different than the neighbor's dog. I've had problems with theft on my property lately. I flat out told the police if I see someone digging through my car, house, shed, whatever they will be getting a bullet in the a**. I'm sick of it!

I would consider calling police. Killing animals is one of three precursory behaviors of future sexual predators, even young ones, and sometimes children who are acting out in that way are victims of abuse themselves. Not the peaceful "chicken world" I've been enjoying here, but something to ponder.

EDIT: I certainly meant the irresponsible killing of animals for entertainment and torture, the way the killing of the chicken was described, that it looked like someone had killed it for fun, for no purpose, and left it to waste.

I do not equate that type of killing with "hunting" or "slaughter". We are hunters. Most hunters I know are responsible, and hunt for food and herd management, and pest control, not to waster. We also raise animals for food. I guess I don't think of that as "killing".

I did not mean to offend. I'm so sorry.
