someone please help? Ideal ticked us off.

haha I do agree he has his very own...strong opinions. I wouldnt snap my own pets neck, whether it was humane or not. I dont think its humane at all. This little critty looks up to me, to be his chicken mama, and i dont think he'd like it very much if i was the one to kill him myself.

Yes, I could have someone do it, if it was absolutly neccassary. but it isnt. Popeye is in his little box, no more peeping though. we gave him some rice pudding, and his own little stuffed friend. If he makes it he makes it. I dont think hes suffering anymore.

Thanks for everyones support. It seems we have an internet junkie on this forum

I understand that you don't want to put your own chick down yourself, but I do understand what Catfish was saying,he is just being direct about it as I think it is just his own manner of speaking.I have read on this forum several times in the past week about people putting down deformed chicks, one said she had her son do it for her and another said she puts hers in a coffee can with a rag soaked in antifreeze or something like that.So it does seems to be common practice, even among the ones raising them for pets.I don't think he was trying to be offensive, I think that is just his practice and in his own way was trying to help you. I am sorry for your sick chickie.

You have stated several times that you are a vegan, I am a vegan too but I am not sure what that has to do with any of this.
The thing to remember here is none of us are perfect and we all make mistakes, we come to this board for advice from a collective, ecclectic and maybe even sometimes eccentric

group. If you put out a question on this forum, you are asking advice from anyone in this group. If someone gives you advice that you don't agree with then just don't employ it but I don't think it is fair to attack people.I think for the most part that everyone who offers advice is really trying to help and means well.I mean they could just skip your post after reading instead of taking the time to respond.I hate to discourage that since I have gotten fantastic and invauable advice from all the knowledgeable people on this board. We are all in a sense kindred souls, supporting eachother and raising chickens in our backyards, are we not.

Sorry about the chick. Sometimes culling can be a hard decision. Think about if you are keeping a pet around for yourself or for the bird. If there is suffering or little hope that they will be able to live a good or normal life, do what is best for the animal. We have the power to keep them alive, or let them go when necessary. Do what is best for them, not our own feelings.

One thing to consider too is that I believe hens will often cull out their own chicks that are weak or deformed.

I also don't understand what being vegan has to do with it. You wouldn't be culling for yourself, you'd be culling for the sake of a suffering chick. Please consider what silkiechicken said.

Maybe being vegan means they don't cull for meat, so they're not into 'culling' ? Just a thought.

I'm new here & found BYC to be a REALLY informative forum. But I do have to say the topic of this post is about the chicks, not specific hand culling techniques. I too understand the objective farmer way of thinking about animals & not getting attached, grew up near Alot of farms.... but for me I'd have to say if I had a farm, All the animals would retire to live long lives, lol. So I'll never be a farmer

I hope your chick lives a long happy life! Sometimes the ones with 'issues' end up having the Sweetest personalities, since they get Special treatment & attention.
