I recently acquired 3 Salmon Faverolle bantams. I have regular sized chickens but I am getting bantams and keeping them separate from the other chickens, so the bantams will have their own chicken run. They will be in a goat shed that will be turned into a chicken coop for the bantams. I dont have the goats anymore so I have this fence where they used to be. Its a small area but is pretty big for bantams. The fencing is 4 ft high and I know bantams are pretty good flyers, so I'm worried they could jump out and get picked on by the big chickens on the other side of the fence or the dogs kill one because of their size. Im soon getting cornish bantams and more bantams soon, so I dont want anything to happen to them. They will all be pets and I need someone to tell me if they would fly over the fence. If they can fly over a 4 foot fence then how tall should it be? Please help!!! Thank you!!

are you planning on showing them. if not you can clip their wings. thats what i do to my oegb. my fence is only about 4 feet tall

I can only speak to parrots and parakeets but clipping wings is only a temporary solution. And not just till they molt the next time. With pet birds indoors it only takes a short amount of time till they build up their strength enough to be able to fly around the house with the clipped wings.

Chickens may be heavy enough that it lasts longer but if you will only know they have built up their strength when one flies out and gets attacked by others or dogs then it seems kind of risky. Not saying it won't work, just saying it's only temporary

if you clip them, i have heard that you should only do one wing. then they will be off balance and have a much harder time coping. if you do both, it can be as yyz0yyz0 says and they will build up the strength. even so, it will still be only temporary, but it might last longer

Thank you! this helped alot. im not planning on showing them, they will be pets. But will clipping their wings be painful for them? I have never clipped wings before! Im sorry, i just dont know much about it. Thank you for the help!!!

For clarification, when you clip wings just clip the feathers and it helps to only snip a few at a time incase any are growing feathers and this filled with blood. I usually hold the bird upside down so I can see the base of the feathers to avoid growing ones. Google search for clipping chicken wings to find many nice resources to learn techniques etc. YouTube might help you as well.
