Actually less risky if only Fair Staff are allowed to handle the birds--then if someone else is messing with the cages it is obvious that there is a problem.

Why was he tattooing salamanders?????

Doesn't everybody tattoo their salamanders?!?!?!

C'mon, you know you want your salamanders to be the coolest kids on the block... LOL. Actually it was to be able to ID them -- he was working on a wild population in which he had to keep track of who was growing how much and brooding how many eggs and so forth, and microchips were not tiny or cheap enough back then. So he tattooed dots, in various patterns, on their tummies.
