Something attacked my ducks?

To start things off I have had two pekin ducks. One male, one female. Their names were Jessie and James. They live in my back yard with the dog, who basically was their own personal body guard.
They have their own pen, hiding area, Jessie had a nest. They were happy, healthy ducks. We have had issues with James being aggressive towards some of us, mainly to my grandmother, and mainly during spring/summer.
I got them in March 2014 and raised them. Everything went well, Jessie supplied us with beautiful eggs, we never had any health issues or anything.

Last night, this morning, and most all day everything was normal. Jessie was sitting on her nest, and James was looking over her like always. However, our dog was inside while my grandmother and I went to the barn my horses are boarded at.
She was only gone from home for about 40 minutes.

About two hours later, she called me saying Jessie's neck was bloody. I told her I'd check them when I was home, thinking maybe James was being rough? I've read that duck mating gets ugly.
I came home and went outside, and James had gotten out of their pen and to the porch.
He mainly has excess blood on him, but there look s like there's blood that came from his ears? He has a scratch on his chest as well and one of his eyes looks odd. Squinty? His eyes were/are watering. I cleaned him up the best I could, and he was extremely calm, and didn't fuss.

I went back out to look for Jessie, and I found her. She was in the very back corner of the back yard. Her entire neck is a bloody mess, and from what I saw her chest was as well.
It looked like something scalped her to be honest. She is dead.

I've been sitting in bed bawling my eyes out, feeling like I could've prevented this. I should've known to let the dog out before leaving.
I had a nightmare a few weeks ago that Jessie was mauled and attacked, but by our dog. But he absolutely would never do such a thing. But now I feel like I should've paid more attention to that nightmare.

I know that working on farms/dealing with farm animals, or just animals in general I suppose, you'll see stuff like this eventually. I feel so awful though.

I do have pictures of James' wounds, and of Jessie's corpse.
James is on the porch right next to the back door with some food and water, and the dog is laying with him. He is not wandering away from the porch.

We live, not really in the city but by no means in the country. Neighbors yards back up to ours, we've got stores near us, a highway, whatever.
Apparently though, there are coyotes on the golf course near my home. We've also had opossums in the yard sometimes.

If anyone has any advice on what I should do for James, or just anything at all please please please let me know.

James may be in shock - he needs to be cleaned up in a lukewarm tub, and have his wounds assessed if you have not already done so.

Any wounds need to be treated. I would start looking into oral antibiotic in case infection gets ahead of you.

He needs to be in a predator-proof place - predators return.

A good duck vet is best for assessment and treatment, but I understand that is not always possible.

Wound treatment includes cleaning off the wound with saline solution or Vetericyn, clipping feathers away from the edges of wounds so that they can be monitored and treated more easily, keeping the duck in, where flies will not lay their eggs in the wounds (they most certainly will if they can), providing vitamins and electrolytes in his drinking water for a couple of days.

An unbreakable mirror for company may help him in his grief.

Thank you so much, I will do all of that.
I contacted a friend who cares for birds and other animals, and she also gave me some advice.
I cleaned his wounds last night and will clean them again today. I checked on him multiple times through the night, and I saw him eating and drinking many of the times, and he has been sleeping next to the door.
My grandmother will not let me bring him in, but I will be for cleaning regardless. Flies laying eggs in any wounds is definitely a concern.
I think he got lucky, I found only one open wound, about the side of a nickle, and I will clean it up well today. The rest seems to be excess blood, possibly from Jessie?

I will see if I can find a mirror for him.

I thoroughly cleaned him tonight, and found that almost everything on him was excess blood.
His right eye is still squinty, and both of them are watering a bit.
He had dried blood around his ears, which I got cleaned up the best I could. On the back of his neck is where the real injury to him is, it's just a scrape. Most of what I thought were wounds, turned out to be blood stains on his feathers.
He's been an absolute doll, and handled cleaning up so well.
I sat with him in the house for a bit after cleaning him, with some quiet music playing. He even snuggled up to me for a couple minutes.

Would bandaging the scrape on his neck be possible, if so, could it help prevent flies from getting on it?
The only time I'm not home is when I'm with my horses/ But due to some car issues, I won't be seeing them for a few days, so I would be able to take extra care of James.

He's slept by the back door with the dog, and he has a mirror now, which he's been sitting next to.

He has continued eating, and he perked up enough to walk around the yard and go for a swim when we were working in the yard.

Tonight, he was calling for Jessie, which made me feel so awful.
We buried her and planted a few flowers over her little spot for her.

I'm so happy I found this site, thank you for your advice. I greatly appreciate it!
