I am a "new" chicken mom:) and new to this website (which is super cool)!! I was wondering if anyone had any idea what might be happening with my Rooster. I have 9 hens and one rooster. We got the rooster this last fall and he is about 3 years old. My hens are almost a year old. He has fit right in! This weekend we noticed his legs are peeling and starting to bleed and they seem like they hurt him. We were thinking it might be a mite, but when I searched the internet it really did not look like any of the pictures I saw?? I was wondering if they shed there scales in the winter, kind of like molting? When we got him, his legs looked a little "gnarly" and I thought maybe that was just because he was older. The other problem we are having is the hens are now picking at his legs!! I would appreciated any ideas~Thanks so much

It would be really good if you would post a picture of his legs.

The other thing is that if the girls are pecking at him, i would take him out and clean him up (try to diagnose what is going on) and unless other treatment prohibits it, spray some blue kote on him while he's healing - before putting him back in with the girls. Once they see blood, they don't really stop pecking until they don't see it anymore.

Thanks for the info! I was looking at some of the pictures on this site and now my husband and I think he must have the scaly leg mites. I am hoping to get a picture of it tomorrow. I think we will have to separate him from the girls. I just went out there to check on him and I try to periodically check for other "bugs" and now I saw what I think might be the lice/mites I am reading about. I got hit with two new things this weekend!! I have been trying to be so careful and keeping it clean, but we do live in the country and there are a lot of critters running around that can pass things on to them:( This site is going to a wealth of information, I am so glad I found it!!
