My chicken used to be a good layer but two weeks ago she stopped laying and hasn't since. I thought she was broody but today I found this in her box near some droppings. Help!!!! What it is? It was about 2.5cm x 1.5 with a rubbery consitency. It was a bit like a hard boiled egg.
That is egg material that became infected and impacted while inside the hen's reproductive tract. If it had stayed there, other eggs would have backed up behind it and also become infected and impacted and it can cause death. I've done necropsies on hens and have seen this. So, your girl is lucky that she was able to pass it. A mass like that is sometimes called "lash." There are any number of reasons why this happens. Sometimes there's an underlying cause and the hen will continue to have issues. Sometimes it's that she's been stressed and things got stuck in there and hopefully it won't happen again. If you hen does look distressed in the future, you can try my "spa treatment" which helps move things along. http://hencam.com/the-spa-treatment/
You can also try antibiotics, although that doesn't get to the root cause, and if she's seriously impacted it won't help.
Do make sure that she is getting fed properly (avoid fattening foods like scratch corn) and she should have lots of veggies. A fat hen has a harder time moving things along.
Information about "lashes" is scarce.
It seems logical that a hen that had previously laid a lash, would be more likely to lay a second, than another hen.
That being said, I do not recall ever reading anything that a particular hen laid 2.
It's going to keep happening.
We need some veterinarian to take this up and find the reason!! it really ticks me off that no one knows why it happens!!
