Soon to be chicken mom

Please DO something about your dog. In many areas folks are allowed to shoot/kill any dog attacking their livestock, chickens etc. Maybe you will need to get a shock collar and work with her, or keep her confined behind an electrified fence/pen. Or give her up.

Hi, I won't be giving her up. I live in a suburban area/neighborhood, with a fenced yard. The new chickens will be basically urban birds. Dog doesn't roam free at all. The chicken in question unfortunately wandered into OUR yard. I'm very aware of my dog's predatory instincts and will be careful about the addition to our non human family. If it becomes a problem, my neighbor will be happy to take over my chickens, I'm sure - the dog will stay. Worth trying though - a little love and consistent training go a long way!

Before moving to Wyoming, I lived in south FL and north FL. One thing you will have to handle is the heat you get down south. A lot of coop ventilation, shade (natural or man-made), cooling treats, a box fan...things like that can go a long way to keep your flock from over heating.

Best wishes!
Thanks for the advice! The area that I've picked out for their coop and run is nice and shady. The box fan idea is great.

If you direct the fan to blow up (not on the birds), that will help air to circulate in the coop. Another thing, my Florida coop had 2 big doors and in summer we could switch them out to hardware cloth doors with locks. You can also put out extra waterers and add chunks of ice to them.

Pretty much whatever you can do to keep them comfortable with the heat & humidity will get your flock through the worst of summer.

Hope it all goes well for you!
