This site has been full of answers that i've been searching for, so I figured I'd come aboard.

The family and I recently visited some friends in Vermont who had a small coop and several chickens. They were left the coop when they bought their house and decided to put it to use. (beautiful coop to waste as it were)
My 3.5 y/o daughter…….and to a slightly lesser extent, my 18mo old daughter loved the chickens. After talking with our friends about them and seeing how much fun my daughters were having with them, I thought we could use some chickens around as a hobby, some pets, teaching tool…..etc.

The coop has been designed and has gotten okayed. Once the area for the coop is prepped in the next week or so, the build will begin.

The plan as of now, is 6 pullets. Breed is still up for debate, nothing set in stone. Local availability will dictate that. I would like to get 2 pullets of 3 different breeds, but finding those at one farm or from one person might be a challenge.

Advice and knowledge always welcome.

Hi, welcome to BYC!!!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the more gentle breeds. Where children are involved, I would recommend going with breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Silkies, Sussex, and Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list, and Silkies and Cochins are the poorest layers (although they are the best brooders and mothers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock.
