Hello everyone!

I am very excited to get started with my chickens, I have a 2 year old son and we are wanting backyard pet chickens.

We have a large fenced in back yard and a larg ever growing garden.

I have two large rabbit hutches (used to house a huge rabbit) that we are modifying to a coop. We plan to let them roam the yard during the day and closed up at night.

After lots of reasearch we have our hearts set on orpingtons, we are thinking two hens maybe 3. We live in town and have allready contacted animal control for all of the laws!

I plan to have a bail of straw, waters and feed ready before we get chicks..preferably feathered.

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

I agree with XxmingirlxX...3 is better than 2 partly for their social order and also because sometimes no matter how careful we are raising chickens, things happen and you lose one. You don't want to be left with just 1 chicken, they do better with flock-mates.

Thanks for joining us, you and your son are going to have a great time!

Hi and welcome to BYC. I think that you have made a wise choice to get older chicks - makes the learning curve a little easier to handle.

I hope that you and your son enjoy your new chicken adventure!

All the best
