Hello, I’ve only had chickens for about 10 months. I’ve learned a lot from you all..
I have a cinnamon queen with an irritated bum. It is cold in central Illinois and a lot of feathers are in the nesting boxes. I’m not sure what is wrong. Please help.

Is the skin pulled taught? It looks a bit swollen to me. Can you feel that red bulge and tell us if it seems bloated with fluid? Is this girl laying, and do you know when she last laid an egg? Also, what does her diet consist of? Is she behaving normally? It’s possible you may need to adjust her diet, so the more you can share, the better. :)

Yes skin is taunt and warm. No puss but irritated. It doesn’t feel like it is fluid and is soft when I pushed on it. She is one of my best layers and doesn’t seem to be egg bound. She eats layers mix made by our feed store. She is acting normal.

Looks like she has a bit of feather picking going on. Apply some Nu Stock cream to her bum to help sooth the skin.
I would look her over for lice/mites as well.

She does look a little fullish in the abdomen, but if she is laying eggs, eating/drinking well and active, then I would just keep a watch on her.
If you are heavy handed with treats, try to cut back on those to no more than 10% of daily intake.

We don’t give treats very often. A couple times a week at most. I am separating her from rest. I can bring her in my “Quarantine area” my closet. I’ll get nu stock tomorrow if I can find it. I will you know the outcome.

Can you not leave her with the flock - do you have a cage or can you section a portion of coop/run for her?
You say she is acting normal - I'm not a fan of completely isolating a chicken that is acting normal and laying eggs - she will lose her place in the pecking order. If kept out for a few days, it's possible you may actually have to re-integrate her.

Cover the red up with a little BluKote or rub some NuStock into the skin to sooth it a little.

You can use the BluKote, Nustock, but Pine Tar is also useful for preventing feather picking. It is sticky, tastes bad, hides, and it they taste it they will stop pecking at her.
They sell it at TSC and most feed stores.
