Devorah
Songster
Hi everyone!
I guess I never really introduced myself here. I’m Devorah from Leyden, Mass. We recently purchased a homestead in a very beautiful rural area with woods. A barn with large coop and run (and three paddocks) were part of the inheritance. Country has always been in my city bones and I am blessed to finally find my roots.
I’m a sourdough baker, mental health public defender, herb gardener and now soon to be chicken mama of 12 chicks: 4 speckled sussex, 4 barred rock, 2 americauna, and 2 australorp. The brooder is ready for its residents — the call will come sometime in April for pickup. A born researcher, I am incredibly grateful to all of you for your time, knowledge and enthusiasm! Your recommendations and gathered wisdom have been incredibly helpful - so a humongous thanks! We all belong to many communities in life. However, it is a treasure to come together with other folks whom I otherwise might never get to meet.
Right now, I’m planning a huge coop clean-out and renovation as well as a run and paddock reinforcement. I hope I am strong enough to withstand the threat of predators, knowing that we can only do our best and that they, too, are a part of our world. We do have a Great Pyr rescue from Georgia, but I haven’t asked him yet how he feels about returning to the “workforce” as a chicken guard! Ha!
Thank you so much for answering all of my terribly naive and newbie questions about raising chickens!!
