SOS please help! She’s been limping for about a week and a half with what I thought was a sprain. I’ve had her in a dog kennel to limit mobility, vitamins, and “physical therapy” in the tub every couple days. No wound was apparent even as a few days ago. What is this and what do I do?!

To keep wounds clean and prevent infection, gently wipe them with diluted betadine or hydrogen peroxide. Then, apply Neosporin (without pain relief) or triple antibiotic ointment to the open wounds daily. For deep or dirty wounds, you can use Dakin’s solution. Just mix one tablespoon of bleach with one teaspoon of baking soda in a gallon of water and make sure it’s fresh every day.

Thank you for the reply, I irrigated the wound with saline, hydrogen peroxide, then applied betadine and neosporin. Then I gave 250mg of amoxicillin. I’m looking for a vet in my area that will see poultry if possible

That's a duck, yes? As you probably know ducks can start limping easily, so it could just be a sprain. Or it could be a niacin deficiency.

That wound just appeared out of nowhere? Have you seen any maggots in the wound? Watch it close and see if the wound gets bigger.
Keep the tissue moist with the neosporin. Don't use the peroxide a bunch more because it can start doing more harm than good. Starting the amoxicillin was a good idea. That should be given twice a day.

How is she acting? Is she eating and drinking?

Yes it’s a pekin. I had assumed it was a sprain at first too and then a neighbor had suggested to look for bumblefoot. There was a small spot on her foot that may have been a start of it so I was soaking the foot and treating for that too but the limp wasn’t improving. I last had her in on Friday, then I worked 4 12hr shifts, brought her in today and found this. She’s been eating and drinking, pooping, and not lethargic. No maggots

I'm thinking she did get a sprain instead of it possibly being bumblefoot. Pekins are more prone to leg issues due to their size. I would get some Durvet High Level B Complex and give her 1ml of it a day, incase she could be at the beginning of a niacin deficiency. Even if she isn't it could still help. Do treat the spot for bumblefoot though!

So you hadn't checked her over for a few days? Is there anything she could have rubbed against causing the wound? Anything you can think of?
That's good she's acting normal, and there were no maggots on the wound.
Treat the wound as I said in my last post and it should heal up well. Also its not best to cover wounds, they heal better that way.

Thank you, yes I will continue with vitamin B complex. I took her to an animal hospital and they recommended euthanasia. No I had not seen her since Friday but the other caregivers in my house were “checking” on her and missed it. She was doing better last I had her in for a soak and was using the foot to paddle when she wasn’t before. So I think you’re right this likely started from a sprain. It didn’t look like bumble foot. My husband’s theory is that maybe a rat got in her kennel recently and bit her. Could there be any chance a heat lamp could have done this? She was in an extra large dog kennel and it was hung outside the top. The only thing in the kennel was food and water and hay so nothing to rub against. Also was curious if the male could have hurt her being too sexually aggressive. I just don’t know how this could have possibly escalated so much in just a few days. Could it have been an infection under the skin/feathers and not been visible? I brought her home and will keep her inside and try local wound care; irrigate with normal saline, apply betadine, silver, and neosporin, continue with vitamins, antibiotics, and an NSAID. Hoping for more recommendations, is the any way to debride the dead tissue?

Does she have a wound on the other side under the other wing too?

I would trim the feathers away from the wound.

Clean and flush the wound with Chlorhexidine. Apply triple antibiotic ointment to the wound.

If necessary, clean/flush the wound with Chlorhexidine for several days, especially if there's a bad odor or the wound is infected.

If you do have an antibiotic on hand, that may be appropriate to give. What do you have?

Glad to hear she's using her leg more!
I don't think a heat lamp could have caused the wound. But its definitely possible your drake could have done damage! I mean it could have been an infection not seen, but hard to know what happened.
Your wound care is good, so you can keep that up.
I'm not sure how to go about debriding the dead tissue!
