Hello to All.
I am new to the Backyard Chickens' site. I have a problem with one of my year old hens and could really use someone's advice. I have a Rhoad Island White Hen, Peck, who on Friday (4 days ago) seemed a little off. Her Comb, which is usually bright red and straight was slumped over and deep red, and her tail is pointed down instead of upwards. I allow my chicken's to Free Range, and when I was watching her, she went to peck at something and spit came out from her mouth before she ate a worm. I knew that something wasn't right, but kept her with her sisters, and kept and eye on her.
The Next day, I went to let them out of their coop and noticed she was rather slow and was trying to hide and/or sit while out to free range. She doesn't seem to be waddling like a penguin, but she wasn't too interested in scratching and pecking, which is not like her at all. I then isolated her and gave her a once-over and didn't notice anything strange on the outside. I did some research online, long story short, I Inspected her crop, and it didn't seem right. I then smelled her breath and it was stinky like fermenting food. I tipped her over and she immediately starting pouring out brown fermenting stinky seedy liquid, and her crop then seemed to empty out. I am not sure if she has an impaction, but i did try to flush her out and tip her again and try to get her crop emptied.
I have been keeping her on liquids, and introduced plain yogurt yesterday and today. I also gave her some olive oil to see if maybe she does have an impaction it would just pass through. she isn't interested in eating or drinking. I let her out to walk, she seems a little interested in worms and some grass. Not too sure if I sould be letting her out, but she seems lonely and sad, and uncomfortable. I have since been lightly massaging her crop, and tipping her over and nothing is coming out, hopefully that is a good sign. her crop feels like there may be seeds in there, could be grass too. Im not too sure though since I dont know exactly what it should feel like. Peck hasn't laid an egg since Friday. I thought she could be egg bound as well. I gave her a warm bath early this morning to see if that could be the issue, plus, her feather's around her vent were very caked with poop and a little stinky so I wanted to clean her up. Her poop was watery, yellowish green and kinda stinky. Today, her poop was a little more solid and yellowish white and green.
It has been 4 days since all of this has been going on, Does that rule out an egg being stuck? could she have gotten sour crop from an impacted crop? Do hens lay eggs if they have a sour crop? Could she become Egg Bound from having either sour crop or an impaction? Sorry so many questions...
I have been doing so much research on this poor little chicken, I just want her to be ok. Anyone who may have any advice, or treatment suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thank You So Much!!
