I have a 2.5 year old Easter Egger that has fluid coming from her mouth. I noticed yesterday that she was making a weird sound and was just standing there with her mouth open. I brought her inside and have been keeping an eye on her. She's very alert and acts almost normal. I felt her crop and it's empty. She had a little brownish fluid that came out when I was feeling it. Her poop is normal. I had given her some food when I brought her in and I believe she did eat some yesterday. I don't think she's eaten anything today, though. I looked in her mouth and didn't see anything. Does this sound like sour crop or could it be something else? Thanks in advance.

If the crop is empty, then fluid should not be coming out of it.

Re-Check the crop first thing in the morning before she's had anything to eat/drink, see if the crop is empty/flat. If it's not, then begin treating according to the article below.

A crop full of fluid may be sour and impacted, you can have more than one thing going on at a time.

Does she lay eggs? When was the last one, any production issues?

Sorry, I should have clarified. She only had maybe a pea sized amount come out when I was feeling her crop. But, the little that did come out was a brownish color. My chickens free range so I'm not sure when she laid her last egg. They all molted recently so production has been down with all of them. I checked her crop this morning and it was flat and empty so maybe it's impacted? I'll follow the article you linked and go from there. Thank you.

Well, could it be that when you felt the crop, it was pushed upward just a bit and she spit of a drop or two of food/water?

Is she still standing about, acting odd - what's her behavior now - is it normal ?

Sometimes a hen will eat/drink a lot and food/water may come back up for some reason, especially if they bend over. They have no gag reflex.

I'd observe her, if she's eating/drinking, active, acting normal, pooping and interacting with the flock, then I'd just monitor her for now.
