Hello!
I went out to the coop this morning and Amelia had just laid an egg (I think it is her first) and it was brown with white patches on it. Am I giving them too much calcium? There was also a very small speck of blood on it which I’m not overly concerned about since my girls are young and are just entering they’re 1st lay. Is she ok? I’m feeding layer feed and I give free choice oyster shells.

Thanks for reading! Im posting a picture of a regular egg and the speckled one.

Those are some BIG speckles!
Are they rough in texture...do they wash off?
Could just be a new layer glitch, egg machine not tuned in yet.

'Speckled' eggs can happen for several different reasons...very few, if any, of which are a 'problem'.

Can be caused by:
Excess or uneven pigment coating.
Excess or uneven cuticle(bloom).
Excess calcium deposits.
Porous eggs can appear speckled.
Some birds lay them consistently, some only once in awhile.
The pigment or bloom can change appearance when wet, then change back when dry again.

As long as bird is getting a good diet and is healthy in every other way, it is no cause for concern.

They are rough, like dried paint or plaster. I didn't try to wash them off, they seemed pretty stuck on but I will try to wash them off.

Today she layed another egg, no speckles but its much paler than all of the other girls'.

Probably calcium deposits then.
Give her time, it can take up to a month for things to smooth out.
