You all nailed it with my last question, so here’s another. This is a 12 week Speckled Sussex from Meyer Hatchery. So far 1 of the 4 hens I bought is actually a cockerel, and I’m really hoping this isn’t the second!

In the photo, she is more upright because she was reaching for a treat lol. I’m mostly nervous about those feathers around her tail- are those saddle feathers?

That looks like a pullet. She's got a small comb and wattles that don't have much color and small feet. Speckled Sussex cockerels grow combs super fast and also tend to have a lot of white on their chests, which is a pretty reliable way to tell gender early.

Interesting- thank you for the tips! This is my first for this breed, so that’s helpful to know.

Definitely a pullet. When our Speckled Sussex cockerels were 2 months they had larger bright red wattles and combs.

Did she end up being a pullet? Based off saddle feathers I would have guessed roo, I’m trying to learn more about sexing younger chicks!
