Hi, this is my 1st post! I have mostly Cochin and a few Polish girls. One (maybe 2) eggs each day has brownish specks or spots that can be scraped off when I wash them. Have any of you seen this and can you tell me what it might be?

I love eggs with specks on them!! Those are always so pretty to me. Now, you may be talking about a spec of the same color as the egg (I'm talking eggs with different colored specks - like freckles) that is like a bump. I think those are calcium deposits or something like that - I may be wrong.

AND WELCOME TO BYC!

If they look like this, they are just pigment and nothing to worry about:

I'm amazed at how sometimes the eggs come out clean as a whistle and so dirty other times. I don't really want to know why. I just wipe them with a dry paper towel and don't wash them until I'm ready to use them. It seems to be consensus on byc that washing eggs right away rinses away their protective coating.

Thanks everyone for your help ---I won't worry about the specks. And I wouldn't be washing most of them except I have a customer that insists on washed eggs. Thanks again.
