Hi!
I got new hens yesterday to help our hen to roo ratio...
They are quite skittish from not being handled much. I have been told they are 13months old. I picked one up this morning to try to help socialize them a bit. This is what I saw:

Does anyone know what this is? Or what might cause it to happen? Is there anything I can do to make it better? She is eating and drinking normally like all the other birds and doesn't seem to be bothered by it...

TIA

To me that looks like a defect or old injury. So long as it stays trimmed and she can eat, it probably won’t cause a problem unless it starts to split wider.

The fixer in me thinks a little nail salon acrylic or hardware store epoxy to mend the split might help it from snagging while those split tips get worn off, maybe it will pull back together...

I'm not sure. It could be as BrahmaChicken5000 said or a possible dietary deficiency.

I wonder if super glue could be used in the split much as doctors do on some cuts??? I'm not saying to do this - just wondering out loud. Maybe a gentle trimming or filing of the beak to prevent further damage?

It actually looks like two separate beaks and not split.. deformity..If it works why fix it?..
