Hi! I have an 18 month old cream legbar hen who suddenly began walking with a strange gait about 5 weeks ago. After bringing her inside for a few days, I realized she had gone blind in one eye and rhats why she was walking funny. She had very mild swelling around it for about 2 days, but no other symptoms that I ever saw Eye color and pupil shape are normal. She is still inside my house bc she is so sweet and I'm afraid to put her back outside just yet. She looks completely normal now, just can not see out of that one eye. My question is, can a hen just spontaneously go blind and it not be a communicable disease? Can I keep her or do I have to cull her? I have 21 chickens. Unless you ask my husband, in which case i only have 12 Lol Help!

Could you post a clear picture of her eye? Is there any cloudiness inside the pupil? Is the pupil in the blind eye larger than the lest one? A lot of us have have hens blind in one eye. Usually they get along in a familiar situation. A lot will depend on how long she has been separated from her flock, and if she can get to food and water. I would let her have supervised visits with them now, and do let her get hurt. Being in the coop and run in a wire dog crate (with food and water) is sometimes helpful to get them reintegrated if she has been gone long.
