Spotted an opossum, how much of a threat?

Been re-inforcing the coop today. The biggest issue I see now is the door. We have a lock on it but worry about something squeezing through where the door meets the frame.

Get a dog.
I have possums and so far they haven't even made it to the compost heap. I feel I must say that possums are unique and wonderful animals. They are the ONLY marsupial on this continent and they can not carry rabies. (their internal body heat is too high to incubate rabies) They are really cowards that try to look frightening by hissing or barring their teeth--but as is known will play possum if really in desparate straits.
I think they are one of the most interesting animals around.

I do too. I have oppossums here and the occasional raccoon. I built my pens out of hardward cloth and some out of 2x4 welded with hardware cloth part the way up. As was mentioned, take one out....another moves in. They come up on my porch and eat the leftover cat food. I like watching them.

Okay the girls are all in their little house for the first time tonight. We went around the whole base up two feet with the hardware cloth and it is fully enclosed on top as well. We do have a dog and I can tell she wants to get to them but it stayed up on the wall and I think it has a nest or whatever on the other side of our wall probably behind our neighbors shed. I am nervous so I hope I can sleep tonight. Anyone else nervous when your chicks first slept out for the night?

I would have been nervous had I know how many predators I had living around us.Hope they don't get attacked.
