I am aware that some hens (all hens?) can/will develop spur nubs (or little bumps of spur/nail) as they age. But, I thought it was a "later in life" type deal, kinda like Menopause! I have 2 SLW and 1 BR that are 6 weeks old and last night, I noticed sharp little spur nubs on all three of them! No one is crowing, but agression is getting worse (I need to get the cooped finished ao they can move outside to a larger space).

I haven't been able to get a clear photo of the nubs, but I do have a fairly clear picture of al three "girls" from Easter...I have questioned my BR being a pullet since I got them and have posted about it in the past (general concesus at the time was pullet). At 6 weeks though, she has a really red comb and wattles...I really hope I didn't end up with roos...I can't have roos and I love these little birds!

You can see the little nub in question on my SLW on the left if you look really close! I'll just keep my toes crossed for now since no one is trying to crow...

That BR looks like it might be a roo. My Matilda at 8 weeks old had a very small comb and no red at all. Here is a picture of her to explain it better.

Thanks for getting back so fast! The red in my BR's comb has me worried, but at a few days old she definitly looked like a pullet. The sharp "pokes" I was getting last night from all of them had me worried though, lol. I suppose I just wait and see if any of them start crowing! They better lay eggs though, I would hate to have to rehome any of them!

I say your BR is a pullet because of her dark coloring. Picture of my 7-week-old BR pullets with two BR roos. Pullets in front, roos in back. Can't comment on the other breed since I don't have them.

Yeah, I paniced when thet were about 2 weeks old too...but consenus at the time was that she was really a she...even though she shows a few "roo-like" tendancies as well, lol. Maybe she's just "filling in" the roo role since they don't have one.

I'll just continue my little "talks" with them about the importance of their ability to lay an egg by September! They should be laying by mid-August, lol.
