Standard Bronze Turkey Hen won't stop laying eggs

We have a one year old turkey hen who started laying eggs for the first time this spring. We collected a half dozen eggs from to incubate (4 out of 6 hatched). She then went on to lay 9 additional eggs that she sat on and incubated herself (7 out of 9 hatched). We took the poults she hatched and put them in a brooder to grow out and she began laying a second clutch of eggs. I understand that normal clutches are <15 eggs and turkeys can have a second laying if they "lose" their babies so this was all to be expected however, her second clutch is now numbering 25 eggs and counting. That is 40+ eggs she has laid so far this year. Anyone experience this before?

I don't think anything is wrong...... I would consider you lucky for getting that many eggs.

Thanks for the reply. I guess we are just playing the waiting game on how long it will take for her to get broody again. May end up collecting some of the eggs and incubating them as we've had good luck with that in the past. I can't imagine all 25 eggs are still ok though..we've had some very hot temps this week here.

You're welcome All the eggs wont be good, but you can try to incubate if you want, or you can toss the eggs and start over. Then you can collect the eggs every day and incubate them.

Well, I am pleasantly surprised. I threw out 2 of the 25 because they did not smell good and put the rest in our incubator. Waited a day or two, candled, and pulled out 5 more that were dark inside. Waited a few more days and recandled yesterday. There was one more dark one and 5 that aren't developing but that leaves 12 that I can clearly see veins in. I really didn't think that many would be good after sitting in days of 100° temps!

On a side note, the hen is still laying eggs..

Have you tried eating them? They taste great. I actually came sniffing around this forum to see if anyone had any laying turkeys, I don't have any turkeys myself, but I tried the eggs once and they''re amazing.

No we haven't, although I have read that the taste is good. We may have to start eating them if she continues to lay like she has been!
