I read and read, searched some more and read some more about the coops on this site. It seemed that a standard coop door size is about 10 inches wide and about 12 inches high. My chicks were looking normal size and tad smaller than my aruacana chick. How much bigger can my brahma get??

Didn't think much when I started to build my coop. And now that the coop is nearly finished, I look at my light brahma. She's very pretty! At 6 weeks old, she stands over 10 inches tall and overtook my aruacana chick.

So I read more about brahmas. Oh dear... descriptions uses things like "gentle giant", "size: heavy or very large". So searched using "brahma and chicken door" as the key words. Typical size door is about 12 inches by 18 inches which is quite a bit bigger than 10x12. I don't think 10 x 12 door is going to be large enough.

It's better to fix things before I move my chicken into the coop. Also raising the bottom of the door off the coop floor by 3 inches. It was flush with the floor. Just when I thought I was finished...

Well I guess my coop still isn't finished.

Picture or two will be posted when I finish the coop. It's taken me a really long time to build.

oh this sounds like the thing i would do my worst mistake was putting corrugated plastic on the roof with it facing the direction of the door so now if it rain i get ALOT of water down my neck lol x x and i also painted the floor and yes............................ painted myself into the corner lol you would have thought i would have remembered that obvious one x

not to hi=jack this thread but does that mean my Brahma x Americauna is going to be too big to use the 12" tall door?

Anyone??

gryeyes= LOL "Chickens will duck ..." struck me as very funny! thanks for the quick response.

burquechick= phew haven't built that part yet, but I hope you all are right, cause I don't have any wriggle room on the pop door! Thank you!

Speaking of sizes for brahMaa. I will be getting a trio of young pullets or cochi brahmas next spring. Since the width is more important than the height, what would the dementions be for 8 largell/ huge, brahMA chickens. Please help me with dementions including run area. No, these birds will not be free grange
Thanks Chris

Ok so I DO have grown Brahma.

They do better with a 16-18 inch tall door that is 10-12 inches wide.
That is not to say they can't get through smaller doors but that it is easier for them with larger.

The other thing affected by keeping "giant" breeds is nest box size.
Mine prefer to have more space. Chickens do stand when dropping the egg so 18" tall an 14" wide works well for mine.
