Tonight my family and I were outside and started our 1st coop build. Its a 4x8 platform that is currently 30 inches off the ground. Is that too high off the ground? Lowering would be easy to do tomorrow before I put the plywood on and start the actual building tomorrow. All I have done now is the base.

Is it a walk in style?

If that is a walk in coop then I would consider it pretty high. I don't have a walk in coop. My coop is 24 inches off the ground. That is plenty of space for the chickens to go under. The area under the coop is part of their run. The 24 inch height is perfect for cleaning out. I have a big door in the back. I open the door and put the wheelbarrow under the opening. Then I use a rake to clean out the old bedding. Works great for me.

No I won't be able to walk in. The actual coop will be 8'x4'x4' pretty much. One whole side will open for cleaning. Im just building with no plans. Ive been in construction my whole life. We will see what I come up with.

That's the point I was getting at.
I had a raised floor coop and working with the chickens in that keeping arrangement bordered on wretched.
I now have a walk in style and it is soooo much better. Cleaning the coop out wasn't so much a problem as cleaning under the coop was.

Same setup as my first wing coop!

You can see it on the left of my run here. You do have to be kind of spry to be able to jump up in there if you need to for anything but other than that has worked pretty well for us so far. As i said we have added a second 4x8 wing off of the front as well. I would like to do a massive coop one day though.

I find it interesting how we all like different styles. I would hate a walk in coop. However, many are like you and love their walk in coops.

Thanks, never thought about having to get on my hands and knees to clean under it. Maybe I should incorporate access doors in my plan.

If you would hate this coop you might want to consider seeking help! :p It makes keeping chickens sooooooo much easier for me!!
It's been up and running for almost a full year and I haven't yet needed to clean out the coop other than my morning ritual of scooping the boards.
It will get a good spring cleaning and I'm going to change over to hemp bedding at that time but otherwise, everything is just so much easier. I maintain a flock of 27 birds.
