My chicks are a week old and were started on Manna Pro Non Medicated Chick Starter. We have about half a bag left and I don't want to wait until the last minute to buy more, but all my local stores are sold out of this feed. Question 1. If I can't get more, do chicks need to be transitioned to a new feed gradually like a dog? 2. What brand of feed would you recommend? Thanks for any input!

Any brand of chick starter is better than nothing at all. Don't get stuck on brand names or medicated/unmedicated if you need chick starter/grower.
Yep, that I know :) My main concern was starting the switch early enough to mix the 2 foods if I need to. We switched our dogs over the course of a week when changing brands, our cat however demands a different food/flavor every day or she will not eat:rolleyes:

Southern States All Grain Start-N-Grow
Yes, I use Southern States feed, not had a problem with it. I believe their Start N Grow is medicated, but I've never had a problem with using medicated feed either.

If you can't find any type of high protein chick starter, I'd try mixing in meal worms and free choice grit as a last choice option. Meal worms are 50% protein. For every four pounds of grower feed which is 16% you need one pound meal worms to reach 22.8% protein.

If you want to know how I calculated this, I used my protein calculator which I shared here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/a-new-chicken-feed-calculator.1355363/

Everybody including me are getting in the chicken game. I'd imagine feed demand is going to be high all year for all stages. My 6 hens are eating about 50 lbs after the first month. Going to open the second bag soon and also a trip to Tractor Supply next week.
