We finally started building our new coop this weekend.

We had to keep things as cheap as possible as i was recently made redundant, we also decided we wanted to make it look as much like a shed as possible to blend in with surrounding neighbours gardens, plus we wanted it to be as discrete as possible.

I started by making the back section of the coop as that would be the easiest as it was being totally covered in Feather Edge as it was going to stand against the rear of or garage:

The 3 pieces of wood you see gradually getting higher are what the roosts are going to sit on.

This is the part that will be sitting against the garage wall, boring to look at

I then started with one of the side panels and was feeling brave so started the one that the nest box would sit on. I started by framing it out to get a basic construction:

I then got carried away and started on the Nest Box. I am only going to put 2 nest boxes in as we are only going to have 8 chickens and i feel 2 will be enough for them.

It is a simple construction (It would be as i made it lol) but very solid and will hold really well.

Whilst building the nest box i wasnt sure what to use for the floor, i was going to use OSB but then noticed some spare flooring from our recently finished bathroom:

With that flooring it is amazingly strong and because of the type of flooring it is, it will be really easy to clean from any spills and it is also waterproof

I have since stained the larger back panel and also attached the nest box to the side panel and added more supports and batons.

I will add some more pictures tomorrow as i intend doing a bit more to the nest box and finish off the side panel with some windows e.t.c.

Sorry if i have bored you but hope this inspires someone to pick up a hammer and start on your own coop. I am a complete novice and im petrified of carpentry but thought i would give it a go after scouring these forums

Thanks for reading.

This is the large back wall piece stained, we wanted it to blend in and we liked the colour so that is what we have gone with

This is the small end panel which i showed a picture of in my first post, it now has the feather edge on and is now a lot more solid.

This is a picture of my beautiful wife (shes gonna kill me for posting the pic with her in it

) holding the opposite end frame with the nest box attached. I will be adding some more struts (I think thats the technical term for them?) and also adding
2 smallish windows along the top for the summer months for added ventilation.

Is is being held on with 2 screws in each piece of wood and it is going no where. Really solid and im pleased with the way its turnned out. Going to feather board the
rest tomorrow so will hopefully have that end done.

Well thats the update so far. Fair bit still to do and as im learning as i go along its probably taking longer then the experts amongst you would like

Will try and post some pics up of tomorrows progress for ya.

Well its finally finished, we have another 4 chickens and even happier neighbours.

We thought our original girls would stop laying due to the stress of the big move and new house mates, but we have had 4 eggs from them every day!!

So there you go, the finished article. Never done anything like this before but i am well chuffed with the result. Me and the Wife have worked hard on this between normal work and life!

Gonna fence off the large area for when we are at work and they can have the rest of the garden when we are home (Although they have been fine in the whole garden since they have been in this Coop)

Anyway thanks for all the advice and help, we have learnt a lot since doing this and enjoyed it thoroughly
