I have spent the last three years learning chickens with a mixed flock. Everything from basic care. food requirements, hatching eggs, and diseases. I am still learning more each day, but I am confident enough to get a pure breed breeding population established. I just haven't decided which breed(s) I want to work with. I am looking to work with four chicken breeds, a mixed flock, (I get a bit attached to the unique traits of mixed birds), and Bourbon Red Turkeys. One breed I am certain of is Delaware Chickens. One breed I want to avoid is Road Island Red (to many breeders around here already). I could use some help deciding which breeds would be best. I am looking for unique breeds that are good for showing and aren't as common around here. Good dual purpose breeds are also appealing. There are just so many to choose from that any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am also looking for the best place/breeder to get quality birds. If you know of a person or place in which to get quality chickens from (not standard hatchery stock), could you please share?

I just got some from Dickhorstman (his name and handle here at BYC). He ships eggs and day old chicks. Reason I chose him was I have a horrible track record with shipped eggs. In a new area now so hoping it's not a postal dead zone and just got eggs. His packaging was amazing. If it looks like a poor hatch he said this time of year he has day old chicks every week. So I'll just have a dozen of those shipped if the eggs don't turn out well enough.
