Starting Poults

Since I had one turkey that came early he got left in there for 46 to 50 hrs because he had to wait for everyone else then I put them in the brooder with the chicks I hatched with them. I put paper towels over chunky shavings just like always and shiny rocks in the feed and water they are almost 2 weeks and doing great.

I leave them till they are dry and i use pine wood chips in my brooder pebbles in the water so no one drowns a heat lamp that makes 100 deg avalable they tend to use distance to mantain temp 2 years and I have not had a single death after hatch

I use kiln-dried pine shavings in my brooder. No paper towels or anything else. Straight on to the shavings.

How long you should keep them in the brooder depends largely on the weather outside. Typically at this time of year I start turning off the brooder heat at four weeks during the day. Turn it back on at night. At five weeks if it's good and warm at night I take the brooder hover out altogether and let them get use to natural day/light cycles and temperatures. At six weeks (if I'm ready) then out onto grass. If the weather is still coolish at night then I might go to seven to eight weeks or put a heat lamp in their tractor.

Often enough they're not ready to use a roost when I move them so make sure they've got a dry place to sleep on the ground until they do start roosting.

.....Alan.
