Hi everyone. My name is jessica, mother to 3 children. I live in arizona. I am just starting out. I have researched quite a bit, but i am still trying to decide what kind of chicks i should start out with. We live in a surburban area, but have a large lot. I look forward to learning from you all, and sharing my journey.

Hi Jessica, you've come to the right place! Choosing the right chickens can take a little time sometimes, but the more flexible you are the better. If you are flexible, may I suggest trying a few chicks of a few breeds that you like? You can grow them up and that can help you figure out which type might be best, or cutest or easiest for you.

Seems rarely anyone has trouble selling thier extra birds here on BYC or even on Craigslist. I worried a lot about extras in the beginning, but none have ever been for sale for more than a couple of weeks before someone collected them.

Welcome, see you around!

Polish - Standard - Buff Laced
Plymouth Rock - Bantam - Barred
d'Uccle - Bantam - Mille Fleur
Silkie - Bantam - Partridge
Silkie - Bantam - White

that is what is in my shopping cart. They are so much more expensive to get female chicks though. I thought you couldn't sex silkies until much later. How do they sell day old chicks as females then? My husband only wants silkies. I just worry if they will good enough layers.

Hi and a huge welcome to you from over the pond..... life can only get better when you have chickens..... addiction starts now........

I only have one silkie in my 80+ flock.... shes more broody chicken than a layer.... they make great mothers.... if you going for bantams.... have a look at the Pekin Bantam...they are adorable and sweet natured..... silkies can be "evil"
