I just got some laying hens and they have been on the roost all morning it is 9 here, what time do they usually get off?

At dawn.

Maybe they need some more time to adjust to their new home. Chickens do not like change, but they will get used to things in time.

Let them go at their own rate, if you can. Of course you will have to make sure they eat and drink.

Thank you i just went and checked on them and they were down walking around

I do have another question though how long should i keep them locked in their coop, i am hoping to let them run around in the yard?

if you just got them they say a week at least.

Most people keep new birds locked up for a few days so they know the coop is home. But since they were slow to get off the roost, I would personally gamble that they already know, and go ahead and let them out.

If they don't go back in at dusk, you could always encourage them with a treat and maybe a little light in the coop til they get settled on the roost.

I have a particular call I always use, and gave a treat when I started. Now they will come running from wherever they are when I call.

Thank you, i have opened the door but they decided it was a good idea to huddle together again on the roost in 100 degree weather and they are all panting.

I hope it's well ventilated in there. Might put a jug of frozen water inside for them, and maybe a fan, if you can. I hope they're not going to let their fear of a new home cause them to get heat stroke. They're not real bright.

i have a large sliding door in the back for my access proped open so they get a little breeze and i kinda exxagerated the temp
