My hen was sitting on 20 fertile eggs. Today is day 27. One chick hatched today, there were still 5 eggs. I shook them, they were sloshy.

So.. I was curious. I broke one. it had a fully formed chick in it encased in thick, smelly, goopy blood. The chick was dead.

What would have caused that? I threw the remaining eggs away because they made the same sloshy noise when I shook them.

It could have been many things that killed the chick. Here are a few reasons that are possible:
Bacteria entered the egg
The temperature was off
The humidity was off
The chick had a defect

I had the same thing happen, 1 out of 9 chicks made it. All the other chicks were underdeveloped and dead. 2 hatched but we're dead soon after.
