Stinky Eggs!

I was over at my parents house today and they had a couple of cartons of eggs that an old friend had brought them from his place out in the country. My sister opened up the carton to show me the eggs. She was wanting to show me the colors because they are different from mine. I know that the different colors depend on the individual chicken as well as breed. But the real shocker was just how bad they smelled! My coop has never smelt as bad as these eggs did, there were even little bugs flying around them!

Do you think that they smelled that bad because his coop is dirty or do you think there is another reason. The Eggs did not smell rotten. Just smelled like poo but there was not any poo on the eggs.

I have no idea, but if my eggs smell even alittle bit, I toss them....better to be safe than sorry.

I bet it was a reused "paper" carton, right? I sell my eggs and only use clear plastic cartons and dunk them in a bleach bath if they are being reused. I order my cartons from eggcartons.com and refuse all paper or foam cartons offered to me by my well-meaning customers. I give them a 25 cent discount on the next dozen if they bring back my cartons. I've seen people store their icky eggshells in the cartons instead of throwing them into the trash can. I keep an enameled kettle on my counter for my eggshells (to feed back to my chickens); however, if I forget about them and they sit too long the eggshells rot in the kettle (stunk really bad) and found little black bugs flying all around them. Also, his nests could be filthy, but bugs not likely to follow the eggs into the carton and to your house. Therefore, I vote that he used an old dirty carton.

Yes-I know the smell you are talking about - we were given a gift of fresh eggs from a woman who came to fix our computer. Her pullets were all laying and she brought us a dozen eggs in a sealed plastic ziplock.

They were clean looking but when I opened the bag, I got hit in the face by a very definite barn smell- a (poopy barn). I took the eggs out of the bag, let them air out on the counter for about 20 minutes -then put them into a clean cardboard egg carton and into the refrigerator. They never smelled after that, and we ate them all - they were delicious.

Now my own girls are laying and none of our eggs ever smelled like that- but I know what you mean- I think the baggie sealed in the poop smell and riding in the warm car just exacerbated it. I'm sure if your parents let them air out and put them into a clean carton they will be fine- Unless they are old, but the ones I had gotten were just collected the day they were laid when I got them a couple of hours later so I knew they were fresh.
